Hi, I'll appreciate if you give me your answer. I wanted to tell the story of my hamster Dubi, who died from cancer at the age of three months only. I had a teddy bear hamster, his name was Dubi, very beautiful, he was only three months old, but last monday he died from cancer. I don't understand how he got cancer since he was so young. He was very energetic and sweet, use to run in his ball a lot. Two weeks before he died, i've noticed that he was less energetic, and went to sleep earlier then usual, while he used to be active the all night. My husband thought we need to let him be, so we didn't take him to the vet then, until i've noticed that one of his eye is half close, and when we saw that his other eye had also a problem i took him to the vet but then it was already the week after. The vet said that it might be affection in his mouth. She gave me antibiotic, and ask me to be back after three days to check it under narcosis if the antibiotic wouldn't work. She also advised to give him baby food, since he might not eating because of the problem in his mouth. But the situation of Dubi only got worse, and he started to develop a lump on his nose. I took him at the same week to another vet for a second opinion, the other vet said that it's very likely that it is cancer, and he offer to come the next day to check that under narcosis. Me and my husband still couldn't believe then that it's cancer and we still thought it might be an affection, since we remembered that once when we put him on the floor to play in his new play ground, he ate something from the floor by mistake which made him scream, so we understood that there was something bad there. But at the third time when i went there, it was already friday, the vet confirm that he had cancer in his nose, and there is nothing to do, he only offer to put him to sleep. I couldn't decide to do this at that moment, since i refuse to believe that my sweet who he's so young is going to die, i wanted to try to do something before i decide this with the hope that his young age will help him survive this horrible disease. And on that friday there were some encouraging sighs, my husband managed to give him some of the baby food using a needle, and he has even been in his ball for a short while. But the next day his situation got worse very fast, it was very difficult to give him food, and my husband said that he might died after he'll feed him, but he managed to feed him a bit. On sunday not only his face looked horrible but also his body was very skinny, and my husband was sure that he wouldn't make it. Dubi survive also the night, and on monday morning when he was still alive, i had a hope, and i saw it as the last chance to try to make him stronger. My husband managed to give him pain killer before he left (that we got from the vet) without food, since he said it was too risky to give him food then. I didn't want to bother him about this, so a few hours later, i've tried to feed him with the needle, but i didn't manage, and Dubi started to make sounds of pain (i don't know if it was of chocking or something else), i put him back in his nest, i pet him a bit and when he was quiet i left him alone to rest, but when i got back one and half hour later, i found him dead in his nest, at the exact way i put him there. I feel really sad because i didn't want to put him down right a way, i wanted to try making him survive this, but eventually he died after i lifted him up to try to feed him. I know there is nothing to do anymore, but i'm so sad that he died with so much pains because i didn't put him to sleep on time. He was the first pet i ever had, i got really attached to him, and i had him not even two months before he got sick so i couldn't give up on him without trying to do something first. Even if it's too late, i still have some questions.
I wanted to know how could it be that such young hamster who looked so healthy and beautiful got cancer? Is it related to hygienic? I used to clean his cage once in a week, he always had the special hamster food and water and some games. There is something i could have done better to keep him healthy?
